Featured Tamer: Juliana
We're kicking off a new type of blog post focused on cloudtamer.io employees, their life inside and outside work, and their take on being a part of the tamer team. To kick us off, I sat down with Juliana, our senior recruiter.
1. Describe your favorite "win" to date here at cloudtamer.io.
Well, I'm coming from a slightly different industry and some of the open positions at cloudtamer.io were new to me. Being able to bring in qualified candidates and close these requisitions in a timely manner has been very rewarding.
2. We're so happy to have you on the team! Can you elaborate on what makes you most happy in your job?
Watching the company grow. When we have our monthly meetings, I enjoy looking around at our growing team. My heart fills with joy when I see new faces every month and know I played a small part in bringing them in. Being surrounded by incredibly smart and driven co-workers contributes greatly to my success as a recruiter. I hope everyone knows how much I appreciate their efforts.
3. I know recruiting can get hectic. That being said, what does your work space look like?
It's a little messy, I'm not going to lie. But, shhh, don't tell my husband as I complain about his messy desk at home all the time. I do try to organize it often, but when you are busy, things can get out of hand. I have a picture of my beautiful children, a planner, benefits information, a stack of resumes from the recent Technic.al.ly Baltimore Career Fair and the essentials: water bottle, coffee mug, snacks, and four different hand creams...
4. Between all the career fairs, interviews and home life: what Starbucks order fuels your day?
Not sure it will come as a surprise, but I rarely go to Starbucks. However, when I do go, I enjoy a grande cappuccino or a passion fruit lemonade (unsweetened please).
5. Favorite hobby outside the office?
I love spending time with my children, listening to audio-books and podcasts and reading articles. I took on gardening over the last couple of years, but I'm not 100% sure it is for me. The flowers are beautiful, but the weeding... oy vey!
6. What podcast are you currently listening to?
I listen to a variety of podcasts. But my current favorites are: HBR's Women At Work, Adam Grant's Work Life, NPR's Planet Money, and parenting podcasts such as Zen Parenting Radio and The Longest Shortest Time. I'm excited for Brene Brown's new podcast, Unlocking Us. I believe the first episode comes out this month (March). I'm hoping it's as good as her books!
Bookwise, I just finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and will be starting White Fragility by Robin Diangelo. I'm excited to read Diangelo's book, I've been waiting for it to become available from the library for a while.
7. How has your career grown since starting at cloudtamer.io?
I was trusted to use my subject matter expertise to build a recruiting "department" from the ground up. In 3 months, I was able to accomplish a tremendous amount of work that, in any other company, would have taken me months (if not a whole year) to accomplish. In my experience, a work environment correlates with one's performance. At cloudtamer.io, employees are allowed to work autonomously at a very high capacity. I happen to thrive in a fast-paced environment where a culture of trust and accountability runs high.
8. What advice would you give new talent managers?
My advice would be: Strive to have a good relationship with your hiring manager. Ask questions and request feedback often. In order to be successful, you will need to understand the role and exactly what they're looking for in a candidate.
9. What advice would you give to someone looking for a new role?
When applying for jobs, it is important to tailor your resume to each job application. Read the job description and highlight your skills and expertise accordingly. Don't be afraid to elaborate on your objective or use a cover letter to explain anything that is not obvious on your resume, but keep it concise. Researching the company and the position prior to a call with a recruiter makes a huge impact. Having a list of questions prepared during the pre-screen will also help you assess whether the company is a good fit for you. This Technical.ly article from their recent career fair also gives great networking tips from the attendees.
10. What are you working on now in terms of recruiting and hiring?
Ashley is the operations specialist at cloudtamer.io.
